Life is much like the sea to me. It is one giant mystery- constantly changing, flowing, the tide rolling in and out, the sun rising and setting making it’s way across the sky as seasons change. The mighty ocean is full of power and magic, full of movement and life. Yet for all these mysteries and seeming changes there is also so much that remains the same.

The ocean never fails to bring me peace. It never fails to heal, to rejuvinate, to align my thoughts. It is always pushing, challenging, always threatening yet never have I found a place more accepting, more nurturing or spiritual. Never have I found a place to be more like me. It exposes you; your weaknesses, your fears and brings your thoughts to the surface. You can’t hide from yourself in a place of such clarity. It builds you; it thrills, excites and washes you clean for a new day.

It is here in the ocean that my husband and I have built our lives. The ocean is what keeps us going, keeps us sane from the ins and outs of life, work, bills and even one another at times. The ocean is a part of us and a piece of our lives that we will share with our children and their children and on and on…

We have committed ourselves to keep this natural wonder as a center for our family. The lessons we learn from the sea we hope to pass on to our children, to build their world out of salt, sand, fresh air and clean water.

14 weeks pregnant and already this is a challenge! That’s right, almost a year to the date since I last wrote on this blog we found out I was expecting. Funny how the seeds of our family were planted in the not so distant past yet life carried on without much thought to what this blog would really become one day.

When I first created this space it was honestly a hope for the future, not knowing quite when that would be and guessing it wouldn’t be for some time. Just like the busy ocean we carried on with our lives; meeting new challenges, overcoming obstacles, re-defining ourselves, our lives and our dreams. Just as the ocean current can grab a hold and sweep us away, we have been riding the waves of a stormy year only to land on the softest sand, the most beautiful deserted island, a lovers paradise with a killer sunset.

We’ve been honeymooning in this new phase of marriage and are thrilled to be adding a little grom to the mix. As we embark on this adventure we hope to use this space as a living reminder of what we hold most dear. This space is where our thoughts will rest after a long day of splashing in the sea, paddling after waves, soaking up the sun and will serve as a reminder of how blessed we are.

We hope you stay tuned as the tummy grows and us sea monkeys work our way through this ultimate ride…

Next up:

The first Ride-the questions, fears and incredible experience of my first wave with little one on board!

I know, I know, I don’t have a baby and I’m not pregnant but I hope to be one day and when that day comes I want to be prepared! I came across this adorable beach themed nursery over at alistbaby.net and wanted to make sure that I had it stored some place safe for future retrieval. I especially love the mix-matched sand shovel “art” and the calming blue paint. This is not only adorable but would fit nicely into the decor of my home as is…now all we need is a cute little one to go in the crib and we are set!

A childhood friend of my husbands and life-long friend to both of us wrote this incredible summary of our week long wedding adventure. Kara beautifully captures every detail from decor to emotion and I couldn’t resist sharing it with you all. Thanks Kara for giving us this memento that so easily takes us back to the days of Santa Maria Bay.

Ryan and Heather Mohr’s Dream-Come-True Destination Wedding

Tandem surfing in the Sea of Cortez with his beautifully tanned bride in her “just married” bikini, put extra sparkle in the eyes of a happy new husband. One last Mexican surf session completed the destination wedding of their dreams, and their guests’ dreams as well.

A week of family and friends filled Santa Maria Bay with fun. A destination wedding to die for brought nearly 100 guests to Cabo San Lucas. Mexican hospitality and service was impeccable for all events, leading up to and following the wedding. The groom’s parents shuttled guests from the airport. Each new guest that passed through the gate to the Twin Dolphin resort was met with a contagious smile, offered a margarita at check in and escorted to their rooms. A sweet welcome gift from their hosts awaited them indicating the thoughtfulness, and generosity to come. The contents, included a corona and some soothing aloe gel, among other appropriate tokens; fun was on the horizon without a doubt!

It was no secret that this group knew how to have a good time, and knew how to do it in style. An eclectic assembly of outgoing adventurous guests meshed flawlessly to enjoy a full range of activities (or lack of activity if the mood so inspired). The bride and groom had posted a rough schedule of events on their website prior to departure for their wedding adventure, and invitations said the couple and their families were “looking forward to sharing the sun, the sea, and the joy of their wedding ceremony with their guests, with food fun and fiesta to follow”. All promises were fulfilled and much more!

The families arrived at the beginning of the week, and guests trickled in at their convenience. A welcome BBQ of traditional Mexican cuisine, and local fresh seafood kicked off the festivities on Thursday evening. A group of over 30 were shuttled into town for some clubbing at Squid Roe. A down day was necessary on Friday. Mellow lounging and naps were a must. Bahia Santa Maria offered plenty of choices for a recuperation day. Snorkeling in the pleasant water was prime (as indicated by the fleet of tourist-filled boats gracing the bay with the presence of what came to be known by the wedding guests as snorkel-palooza). During the few afternoon hours when sun-burnt backs and bright flippers dominated the water, guests found serenity in or around the hotel pool, complete with swim up bar. Or they could choose to relax in the warm rays spilling onto their private balconies. Breathing beach air and appreciating the view of topaz blue water rolling onto the white sand. It was difficult every night to be wooed away from chatting around a bonfire, or being lullabied by acoustic guitar tunes, dancing, or star-gazing in the hot tub, but at some point, turned down sheets would speak. Beds beckoned with an enticing whisper that became irresistible. The promise that tomorrow would only bring more unforgettable adventure, allowed the guests to sleep peacefully in luxurious, perfectly air conditioned and comfortably furnished rooms.

A casual evening rehearsal Friday night was followed by a bonfire with pizza and beer for all guests. Extravagance was certainly not the rule at this event, but was none the less an appreciated exception when it presented itself. A generous neighbor in a condo down the beach couldn’t help but be caught up in the infectious fun-loving spirit of the couple at the heart of this entourage of family and friends. The neighbor offered to bring his 80′ yacht into the bay for the day of the wedding, complete with crew, music, food and drinks! While the bride and her attendants were pampered with spa treatments at the resort, the groom’s friends and family allowed no opportunity for fun to slip through their fingers. Even after an unfortunate encounter with a jelly fish on his wedding day surf session, the groom still found it in him to join the party on the boat. He climbed to a 25′ platform to join his friends and throw a one and half front flip into the sea.

The wedding invitation that all had received stated “friends forever we will be, whether walking on the beach or sailing on the sea”. Fittingly the wedding day, a celebration of two friends committing themselves to one another, provided an appropriate opportunity for the guests to become better friends as well. Those who had found themselves new acquaintances, quickly became the best friends as the music played out there on the water… All this and I have yet to mention the main event!

The ceremony and reception was carried out with the perfect proportions of class, tradition, and uninhibited celebration. Cocktails were served by the pool under festive pink and orange paper lanterns, and lit palm trees. The groom and his attendants graciously mingled with the guests until all were escorted down the aisle lined by tiki torches to their places on wooden benches set on the sand. Bamboo poles and bright flowing chiffon framed the oh-so-casually clad pastor, and bare-foot groom. Groomsmen wearing simple white linen beach shirts and khakis twirled the bridesmaids in their pink sundresses into place. As live mariachi music played little flower girls ambled down the aisle scattering petals. A radiant, sun-kissed bride appeared and locked eyes with her admirably anxious groom grinning with anticipation. The service included an appropriate sand ceremony where the pastor, bride, and groom alternated pouring various colored sand to beautifully mingle in a glass vase. Guests tossed colorful confetti at the newly-weds, and the wedding party literally skipped back down the aisle after them. Light-hearted photos were quickly captured in the magical lighting before a nearly unbelievable backdrop. All guests shared a taco dinner, drank mango margaritas and Tecate. They danced and laughed into a state of euphoria that eventually carried one and all (many fully-clothed) into the pool. The photographer, grandparents, and hotel staff joined in for the splashing, chicken fights, and impromptu diving contests that lasted until the early hours of the morning. Not a single detail was amiss, down to the center pieces and sand-dollar shaped cookie favors. The crowning glory was literally FIREWORKS! A surprise to the bride – she’d once mentioned dreaming of fireworks at her wedding – even this dream came true!

In the beginning there were two young individuals. One just beginning to test the limits of life without curfew, parental supervision, and the freedom of being a first year college student away from home. The other, well adjusted to life on his own, living in a quiet coastal down, close to surf, away from crowds, focused on the future and working his way through his sophomore year of college.

Although we were in different phases of our lives, different years of school, different towns, different friends, different hobbies we both felt a longing for something more. Something more out of life, something more out of relationships, something that would grab ahold of our hearts and refuse to let go.

Fate, chance, coincidence, whatever it was, we are grateful for that special weekend, just after New Years 2003 when are eyes locked and our hearts leaped. We had found one another! Never before had we met someone and felt such immediate chemistry. We needed more of each other, we had to know everything, we had to see one another again!

Does love at first sight really exist? As terribly naive and sickly romantic as it sounds, yes I would have to say that it does. After meeting one another we each went back to our parents (neither of which we openly had talked about past relationships with) and gushed about the fire and passion we found in the other, how we just knew that there was something different and special in this “one”. I remember looking my dad in the eye and telling him that I had met the one, this guy was going to be my husband.

72 hours together was all it took and the rest of our lives was sealed. The distance and fact that we were attending two separate colleges, with two very different life plans didn’t even phase our desire to be with one another and our commitment to make this relationship work. For five months every single weekend, one of us would drive to see the other. We would spend 2, maybe 3 days of bliss together and then head off in our separate directions for another week of late night phone calls and life apart.

Although it was difficult not seeing one another outside of a few days each week, I look back now and think how blessed we were to have that time apart. How many couples do you know that are able to balance their relationship, friendships, school work and experiences of being a young college student? We were able to have one another but also keep the excitement and adventure of college life without having to jeopardize other aspects of our lives. We were able to continue growing as individuals and become more of who we are.

The force that compelled our weekend drives for 5 months finally pulled so strong that I decided to take a chance and move to be closer to my love. What a decision that was! Without the full support of my family, with friends thinking I was crazy, I followed my heart, packed my car and landed on his door step with open arms.

The next two years unfolded as effortlessly as the start of our love affair. We laughed, we surfed, we studied, we traveled, we met each others families, we moved in together, and on our two year dating anniversary we were engaged. Two more years of love casting it’s spell went by and on June 24th, 2006 we became husband and wife.

A fairy tale wedding to say the least, we were married on the sandy beach of Santa Maria Bay, Mexico. Surrounded by one-hundred of our family and friends we exchanged vows, kissed a thousand times under the setting sun, danced the night away, had an impromptu backflip contest into the pool and watched in amazement as fireworks dazzled overhead. It was magical to say the least and another amazing start to a new chapter in our lives together.

Not quite a mama but a chick who loves to surf and dreams about passing the stoke to her keiki one day…This blog serves as a place to jot down the adventures of an ocean loving, surf addicted, free spirit and the unfolding journey of mommyhood. This will be a place to document the life of diapers, messy spaghetti faces, fingerpaintings and a growing family by the sea. Here you will find the evolution of two love birds who share a passion for the ocean, a longing for perfect waves, distant shores and hopefully an entertaining snapshot of how we balance a life of surf, sun and a growing family.
